I had to see if I still had it. While practicing monologues during improv class on Saturday, the group before mine was given the word “fire,” a word that instantly reminded me of the day my dad came home with a brand new car, a sporty silver Ford Probe. I was so impressed by the great loud stereo, nothing like our minivan’s, which my dad proudly blasted, triggering instantaneous family dance parties in the garage.
“Fire” didn’t remind me of an actual fire, so much as it brought back a memory of a song, the one I remembered most from those garage dancing days, Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” I LOVED that song – it was catchy, and I thought if I memorized it I’d have a one up in history class, which by the way didn’t really work. My devotion to the song did, however, come in handy one day when my choir teacher decided to impress the class with a pop song rather than a repeat of “This Land is Your Land.” I remember bragging to all my friends that I didn’t even need to look at the words because I already knew them.
I’ve been sick all weekend, and getting a little bit stir crazy, so I decided to find out – do I still remember? It was so long ago… This is my one and only recorded lipdub to this song (lie, I had one practice) – Not perfect, but I think I did pretty well.
