R.I.P. Michael Jackson
I know he was controversial, but regardless his music made my childhood an extremely happy one with many fond memories…
- I discovered Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” on a Billboard greatest hits compilation CD while going through my Dad’s CD collection.  This one song jumped out among all the top hits. The beat was so happy and I couldn’t believe such a song was sung by a child. I played it over and over, dancing many hours on end with my brother and sisters in the living room. They loved it too.
- And there was my younger brother Ryan’s obsession with “Bad,” which really annoyed me because he was too young to sing the lyrics correctly. He just sang “Who’s Bad? I’m Bad. Who’s Bad? I’m Bad”- I always taunted him to get it right!
- “Thriller,” a great music video/short film. I loved the song, the video and was fascinated by the behind-the-scenes footage with John Landis. I watched it a bajillion times.
- The release of History, a two-disc greatest hits CD, that introduced me to a whole bunch of MJ songs, both old and new, that I’d never heard before yet instantly loved. When the CD was released it seemed like the whole world had rediscovered the pop star. VH1 and MTV started replaying old videos from the 70s and 80s and it seemed as if everyone had fallen in love with the music all over again.
- The anticipation of music video premiers on NBC is another memory. I remember staying up late on a school night to watch “Black or White.” Yes, there was that the whole bizarre violent scene that he played out on the car that got a lot of negative media attention, but I didn’t care because I was so fascinated by the cool face morphing special effect in the video. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before. I knew I’d see something new each time he performed and that’s why I kept listening, tuning in, etc. He always gave 100 percent.
-Oh and don’t get me started on Moonwalker. I loved that movie - Joe Pesci, 1940s gangster dance scenes, a giant cartoon rabbit, “Man on the Mirror,” “Smooth Criminal” and the Beatles cover of “Come Together”
Wow, I really could go on, but I’m going to stop here. Like I said, so many good memories from his music. It’s this legacy that I prefer to remember and I will do as such.
