Great interview with cinematographer Steven Poster.

On set-up:

There is something I call in any architecture, in any location, there’s something I call the power spot. And from my work in documentaries i think i started to think about this. And I’ll walk into a scene, I’ll walk into a set or a location and I’ll try to determine where that power spot is and I’ll stand there and I’ll see kind of a geometry of the way the walls are, the windows are where the lights are coming from, where i have the ability to put lights to create that scene… The first thing that comes to me is what is the geometry that I’m going to be putting into the frame. What is the composition? Second thing is lighting. How am I going to light this scene and give it the tone and breadth the script calls for and the director wants.
