From an old blog post dated October 1, 2006:
Goodbye Seattle, Hello New York
Leaving Seattle was tough and bittersweet. I only hope that I meet New Yorkers as wonderful as the friends I have made in the past ten or so years. Last night, while at dinner with friends the reality of my situation hit me. I felt nervous, uncertain and scared. Seattle has always been my comfort zone and New York well it’s a massive place that others always warn you about. Even though I’m confident that this move was the right thing to do I’m still a bit freaked out. Hopefully the feeling will pass soon.
I arrived this morning safe and sound to my new, but temporary, digs in the East Village. There’s a coffee shop below my great apartment called Ciao for Now that sells fabulous pumpkin bread (an Erin favorite) and a psychic reader across the street who will tell me my future for $5. My roommate tells me she’s a prostitute and the shop is really a front for her more profitable business. Ha!
Many more New York stories to come…
I’m posting this today because tomorrow marks my three-year anniversary in New York and I’ll be hoping on a plane to Nashville for my friend Lauren’s wedding who I met through one of my very first friend’s in New York.
I’ll never forget the morning I arrived on the red-eye. I literally wore about five layers of clothing, including my heaviest coat, because I couldn’t fit it in either of my two suitcases. It was a very muggy, rainy morning and my cab driver didn’t drop me off at my apartment - just somewhere in the general area. So there I was melting in my clothes, lugging my suitcases, hoping my new roommate wasn’t a psycho and totally scared, excited and hopeful for my new life in the city.
I could go on with the the stories, but the one thing I learned about living here, and something that’s true of life, is your experience is really what you make it. My “experience” here is continuing to evolve and I’m just as hopeful and excited for what’s next as I was three years ago to the very day.
Many more New York stories to come…
