I stumbled upon this photo entitled Children with Nun by Peter Hujar at the Matthew Marks Gallery in Chelsea this weekend.
This photo was featured in a series of Hujar’s black-and-white photography documenting developmentally disabled children at play in Southbury, CT and Florence, Italy in the mid-1950s. Out of all of the images this one really struck me as the only boy looking at the camera and photographer quite visually contrasts the others. I found it quite beautiful how Hujer captured the moments of childlike joy existing within damaging disability.
