I came across the artist Isabel Bigelow while perusing this month’s Elle Decor. I liked the few pieces they profiled, but more so, I was struck by how she explained the kind of art she aims to create (quote below). Her comment reminded me of a walk I once took in Bellingham, WA during college. I lived in an area where I had the option to either take a hiking trail through the woods or the standard, boring street path to class. One morning, I remember getting up and it was so foggy outside. I thought about taking the street path because I wasn’t sure what visibility would be like on the trail. I teetered back and forth, but ultimately decided to take the trail, and I’m glad I did. The fog, mixed with a bit of sunlight, peered through the green maple leaf trees and created this ethereal moment for me.
Oh, and I also am remembering that I was listening to Moby’s “My Weakness” throughout the walk on my iPod. I had just seen the movie The Perfect Storm and that song played during a very sad moment in the movie. Remember? There was so much emotion and sadness in the melody and hearing it among such natural beauty created this amazing moment so moving that I left the forest with tears in my eyes. It was like I walked through heaven… or a painting.
