Last night, I got a mega dose of girl power at Glamour’s Women of the Year awards. To say I left Carnegie Hall inspired would be a gigantic understatement. I was moved to tears. It was a night of one heavy hitter after the other, after the other.
First, former president Bill Clinton introduced Maya Angelou, and although this gracious woman appeared physically frail, her voice was just as strong as the day she first read lines from Phenomenal Woman. Next, Dr. Jane Aronson was honored for her dedication to the Worldwide Orphan Foundation. I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the house once the stage filled with kids all of whom she helped find families - the visual was so incredibly moving. It was also exciting to see journalists and ex-North Korea captives Euna Lee and Laura Ling and the women of Iran’s One Million Signatures campaign. But it was Amy Poehler who not only made me laugh, but encouraged me to close my eyes and imagine how my 10-year-old self would envision myself today. Oh, if you only knew me back then.
The point of the night was not about the title of most amazing woman in the universe, but it was about the belief that anything is possible if you have enough guts to go for it without fear. And the evidence? All the phenomenal women honored that evening.
