One sure way to feel like a foreigner is to explore establishments where English is not an option. On Saturday, Amir and I met up in Chinatown and walked along Canal and all its side streets. I usually pass through this area, occasionally picking up a few things from the market, but I’ve never taken a moment to really explore. This may or may not have do with the fact that years ago, before I lived in New York, I was naively lured below Canal St. and into an underground factory of sorts for $5 DVDs. A rookie mistake.
The rain was a bummer, but it literally pushed us to explore some of the shops that we might have passed by otherwise including an Asian grocery, a fancy Dim Sum restaurant, a traditional tea shop and many fresh fish and produce markets with so many exotic fruits I’ve never even seen before.
It wasn’t the best day to have my camera out, but I did manage to get a few photos like this one of a serious game of I-have-no-clue. It had to be somewhat of a big deal in the community because more than a dozen people gathered around to watch.
