6 Myths About Organics

boutofcontext:

Continuing through my clippings file, I found this Marie Claire article (yeah, that’s right, what of it?) dispelling common misconceptions about organics, discussed tangentially by Neurosophy, squashed, tiffany, et. al., here. The myths:

  1. Organic Food is Always Better for the Environment
  2. It’s More Nutritious
  3. It Tastes Better
  4. You Don’t Have to Be As Careful About Washing It
  5. You’re Supporting Small Farms or Eco-companies
  6. It’s Better for You

Yes, this is true. There are many myths about organic products, but to be fair the term “organic” is used loosely these days, often for marketing purposes. In fact, when buying organic foods look for certification from anyone other than the USDA. Although, if the product is certified by another party in addition to the USDA than you should be fine.  The USDA has awarded the term “organic” to many undeserving products in a short period of time and third parties are suspicious. In fact, there are many lawsuits at the moment involving the USDA and this very issue.

Also, I got to say, this Marie Claire list is pretty ridiculous. I mean some of these myths are stated as absolutes and we all know there are exceptions to every rule.  Of course, organic food is not ALWAYS better for the environment (if you live in NY and buy organic produce from California rather than from a local farm than of course it’s gonna be worse for the environment).

Just my two cents :)
