Old, Funny, Unpredictable New York

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY! The holiday weekend did not disappoint! I discovered I did in fact have a few friends in town, which of course added to the fun. Here’s the recap.

Saturday- Began with an early walk with Elle (Sarah’s chihuahua) all over Chelsea, Gramercy and Union Square. Next Lindsey, Anthony and I found ourselves at The Cloisters, a medieval monastery-like structure and museum overlooking the Hudson River in Fort Tryon Park. It was strange how a quick A-train ride instantly placed us in this very tranquil, European scene bursting with medieval art, architecture and beautiful gardens. My only disappointment was that there wasn’t a winery nearby, but oh well. Pictures can be found here.

After learning all I need to know about the Unicorn Tapestries, we headed back downtown for some comedy. I know it’s a bit random, but up until Saturday, I had never seen true New York stand-up. It’s been on my “to-do” list for awhile now, so we went to Comix on 14th and 9th. Maybe I just got lucky with the night’s comedian selection, but I laughed and laughed and laughed. I will definitely be going back :)

Sunday- I’ve been wanting to visit Ellis Island for awhile now, and I know it’s touristy, but it’s also an important trek for me since my grandmother was one of its entrants. Anyway, after discovering a line longer than the one I experienced at The Vatican, we decided to save it for another non-holiday related weekend. Instead we walked across the Brooklyn bridge, explored DUMBO, checked out a giant “telescope”, and danced to a Navy brass band and crooner sing “Luck Be the Lady” all while taking in gorgeous views of the bridge on it’s 125th birthday.  I also brought along my new Holga camera and I have film I can’t wait to develop!

Monday- I spent today as I would a typical Sunday-  brunch, read, ran along the Hudson and grocery shopping. I also cooked an amazing meal if I do say so myself-spicy cilantro salmon served with an arugula salad that included smoked mozzarella, scallions, peppers, pepitas and cranberries. And now, I’m happy to report that When Harry Met Sally is on the telly. Ah, happiness lingers…
