I saw two movies this weekend one of which was Wall-E. Typically, you wouldn’t find me rushing to the theater to see an animated film. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the genre for its artistic value and contribution, I do, it’s just my film “must-see” list runs deep and it’s rare when an animated one makes it to the top. Wall-E was a different story. And, as cheesy as this next statement is I’m going to say it anyway- it won over my indie, dialogue-heavy, film-loving heart.
I read somewhere, maybe in NYMag, that the creator had no intention of making a statement on the environment with this film. I don’t buy that for a second. The movie couldn’t have made the global environmental welfare warning message any clearer. To wrap it all up within a tale of robot love was oh so clever.
During the film I thought I might get tired of the constant calling out of Eeeeeee-Va or Waaaaallllll-E, but no, it was endearing. I loved it even more when the kids sitting behind me got involved in the shout-outs when it looked little Wall-E wasn’t going to make it. Adorable.
If you’re on the fence about seeing it because animation isn’t typically your thing, I say give this one a chance.
