How do we change patterns that are so normal to us?
This question was brought to my attention earlier today by Rachel. It’s unsettling really because changing a pattern is just one of those things you know you have to do yet put off and off and off.
I’m sure my heightened sensitivity to this question has to do with the turning of the calendar year. I’m not looking for “a fresh, new start” with 2009, but I am resolving for strength to overcome the safe patterns I’ve held onto in my adult life. This really I think is the root of resolutions. We all have something we want to change and generally those wants are the same year after year. Mine has always been more courage to really go after what I want - personally and professionally- and little by little I’m getting there. This year, I resolve to take grander steps without fear.
