Advice for first-time filmmakers

After a few good hours of productivity, I started to think about all the practical advice I’ve received over the past few weeks regarding my parlay into filmmaking and I thought I’d share with you all.

Don’t wait to start your own personal project. This may sound like an obvious duh, but let me tell you - movie making is daunting, especially for a first-timer. A part of me feels like I need more experience before committing to a documentary subject, but that’s a poor excuse. I’m learning that in this business you can very easily learn as you go - as long as you’re aggressive and smart about it - which I am :)

Try everything - Documentary filmmaking consists of a lot of handheld, verite style shooting very different from narrative feature set ups, which are much more complicated and composed. I might not need to be a whiz at setting up a dolly or finding a gaffer clamp as a documentary filmmaker, but I’m glad I’ve had the experience. My knowledge of production work has increased exponentially by just spending a few days on set. Plus, there is something highly addicting about being where the action is. I loved it and definitely want to gain additional production experience.

Network - Take Social Media Connections into the Real World - If I told you all of the opportunities and connections I’ve generated through Tumblr, Twitter, etc. you wouldn’t believe me. Put it out there that you’re looking for work! I’ve had so many conversations with people in and out of the biz and the opportunities are just flooding in, which brings me to my next key learning and bit of advice.

Take advantage of every opportunity - This is something I’m working on. I’m currently working with two documentary film companies - one as an associate producer on a film (very exciting). However, I need to continue to network and meet with contacts on my list that I have yet to connect with. You have to strike while the iron is hot before the opportunity is lost.

I’m sure there’s much more to share on the topic, but I’ve got to get back to work :) Reblog if you have additional advice as I’d love to hear it!!
