Significant news in independent filmmaking today - Geoffrey Gilmore has left his position as director of programming at Sundance to become the Chief Creative Officer for the Tribeca Film Festival. Gilmore was Redford’s right hand and has played a very large role in making Sundance what it is today. This could mean great things for Tribeca and New York filmmakers - pretty exciting news! It will be interesting to see how this affects Sundance.
Slashfilm analyzed Gilmore’s influence on Sundance and in a nutshell concludes that industry “tastemakers” like Gilmore have a great deal of power over the indie films that garner wider distribution. In theory, we’d like to think a great film will be eventually discovered. But in reality, it doesn’t always happen that way.
